Artist Statement
RICHARD QUAN’s passion for the arts has spanned more than three decades. At a young age, he spent countless hours sketching figures from Marvel Comics. In high school, he won the “New Attitude Award” in a statewide yearbook design layout competition. His artworks appeared in two volumes of his school’s yearbook and on the front cover of one volume. Quan majored in Art Design at Duke University and studied art history, figure drawing, two-dimensional design, painting, sculpting, and photography. His black and white photography instructor was a National Geographic photographer and his painting instructor was a Russian born artist. Quan developed an art style of his own at Duke. Under the request of two professors, a renowned dance choreographer and an acclaimed art professor, Quan conducted an exclusive photo-documentary of performers preparing for a concert. He conducted photograph of dance professionals affiliated with Ways and Means Dance Company, Duke Dance Program, the American Orchestra of Paris, the American Dance Festival, Co-Motion Dance, the Dance Theatre of the Southwest, Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, Sybil Dance Company, and UN Modern Extension. Quan spent hundreds of hours over a span of several months photographing this group of talented professionals practicing inside the Ark, a dance studio on East Campus. The result of his work was showcased in a one-man show photo gallery during the opening day of the concert. Quan combined what he learned in dance photography, capturing images in a fast pace setting, with what he learned in painting. In a theory of design class during his senior year, Quan began a research project entitled, “Experimental Art: A Modern Perspective of Recombinant Styles.” The goal of this project was to explore “recombinant style,” a term Quan coined as an expression relating to the merger and integration of various styles of art. Major emphasis was placed on cubism, impressionism, and realism. Samples of artworks that were used as guidance resources for this research include: Brooklyn Bridge by Joseph Stella (Cubo-Futurism); The Bride by Marcel Duchamp (Realism); Mystery and Melancholy of a Street by Giorgio De Chirico; Les Demoiselles D’Avignon by Pablo Picasso (Cubism); and Prima Ballerina by Edgar Degas (Impressionism). The focus of the subject matter was the movements of dancers. Quan is the Founder and Managing Editor of Impact Times magazine. He is also the author of the critically acclaimed literary novel Siren’s Silence (received 5-stars review by the Midwest Book Review). His collection of paintings and drawings were exhibited at the Regency Fine Art Gallery in Atlanta, Georgia.
