JANIE CHU: EDUCATION: Belmont University, B.A. (Music). BACKGROUND: Janie began her musical career early. At the age of 6, she began piano training with a diverse repertoire. Despite her love for piano music, she knew that her penchant for commercial pop music outweighed her desire to pursue a career as a classical pianist. She sang, wrote and played small melodies as a child. By her teenage years she had written full songs and won prestigious music awards. Janie fully embarked on her musical pursuits after transferring into the Commercial Music program at Belmont University in Nashville, TN during her sophomore year. At Belmont, she not only received commercial voice training and experimented with piano styles that drew comparisons to Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, but she also was exposed to more guitar heavy singer-songwriters as Jonatha Brooke, Patty Griffin and Alana Davis. While still drawn to angst-ridden alternative pop/rock material, Janie became fascinated with folk influences and picked up the guitar herself. She returned to Atlanta, her hometown and birthplace, and recorded demos while performing in renowned local venues including Eddie's Attic, Red Light Cafe, 10 High, Vinyl, and Smith's Olde Bar. She continues to play as a solo artist and with a band. With a full-length album out, (titled "Roots") and recently noted as an IMWS showcase semi-finalist, Janie's music continues to reach new fans through various media channels including Pandora, New Artists Radio, Last FM.com and a host of digital distributors that includes ITunes, Snocap, Ruckus, and Rhapsody.
